Summer
2004 Ramblings, Part 3 - Lowcountry
In
spite of the summer heat in the Lowcountry, I did spend some time
running the roads down along the coast. Here is some of what
I captured while I was down here.
Three
Turtles on a Log,
Pocataligo River near Manning,
S.C.

And
now, back towards the coast ... I was out at our Manning project,
and saw these three turtles on a log in the river. Then another
turtle swam to the surface, as if to start at me. No meaning
whatsoever, but then again, does a lazy day on a country river ever
have higher meaning?
Elliot
Landing,
Western Clarendon County, S.C.

When
one weaves and winds their way along the Clarendon County backgrounds,
sights like these pop up - Elliot's Landing, complete with abandoned
old buildings and a swamp, gives the lost or wondering traveler a
rare slice of the old rural South.
My
old house in Clearview Subdivision,
James Island, S.C.

This
is where I lived in my youthful years.
The family's split up, grown up, and moved on ...
Penn
Center,
St. Helena's Island, S.C.

Early
in the Civil War, the large plantations between Beaufort and the coast
were captured by Union forces, creating a large population of freed
slaves. The Penn Center was one of the most ambitious efforts
in the post-war South to help them gain some degree of independence
in their lives. Off the main highway on the island (US Route
21) and set among a thick canopy of oak trees, the location is as
impressive as it is historically significant.
