Summer 2004 Ramblings, Part 2 - in the Upstate

When it gets hot on the coast, there's always the Upstate.  A ready-made escape from the heat and humidity, it's usually a much nicer place to go in the summer.  One of the best places to spend time is way in the foothills, past Spartanburg and Greenville, with the mountains in the background.

Roadside waterfall,
Highway 11 in Greenville County, S.C.

Just east/north of the junction with U.S. Highway 25 in upper Greenville County, Highway 11 runs alongside a modest waterfall, complete with a cool shallow pond.  A great place to stop and rest.  There I am, along with my daughter Cecilia, in some photos from the waterfall.

Pickens and Spartanburg Counties, S.C.

While riding down SC 11, much of the north side of the highway is nothing but the side of mountains.  Here are a couple of them.

Strange Lookin' Rock,
near Van Wyck, S.C.

Between U.S. Highway 521 and the Catawba River, near the town of Van Wyck in Lancaster County, is this old rock that looks like a granite version of a mushroom.  Didn't see any Deadheads around though ...

Small town in Chester County,
Edgemoor, S.C.

Edgemoor is a quiet little town on S.C. Route 901 in northern Chester County.  When I lived upstate, I used to enjoy running the roads a lot and passed through here many a time.  On the left is the old town school, long since closed.
